History
Paradise Gardens was incorporated in Maricopa County 1960. Builder Robert Altherr hired well-known architect Al Beadle to design the first homes to be comfortable, modern living for average people who appreciated living in the desert. At the time it was built, there was very little development this far north, other than horse properties. An aerial map from 1962 shows how many houses were built by the time Beadle dropped out of the project. All the current homes are shown as being built in a 1979 aerial.
The nearby Phoenix Mountain Preserve was purchased and made into a preserve by the City of Phoenix in the 1970’s, ensuring its protection from encroaching development. For an excellent, in-depth article about Paradise Gardens, visit this Modern Phoenix web page.
